  • That idea

    ezracooperst President

You ever had that experience when you are instantly hit with what you believe is a stroke of genius. Like a bolt of lightning, you have came up with a brilliant new idea. It’s an idea so good, so novel that you can’t help but feel excitement. An idea becomes an immediate obsession...it’s a gamechanger and you start scribbling notes and the outlines of a business plan. By the time you get home you have already played out the execution in your mind and are counting the money the idea made you. Mogul status!!

And then you decide  to google the idea just to make sure it’s truly as special as you think it is.

Oh, shit. It was already done. Some other person got rich on it...back in the 90s according to their website.

So, do you feel bummed or a pride in humanity for thinking of that idea way before you did? I guess a bit of both.

    Anyways...on to the next one...

  • LP: Minecraft #300 and SPOTIFY: Programming Patch Notes 02.18

    ebregman Programming/Distribution

Welcome to the first monthly update from your friendly neighborhood programming and distribution team. Here’s what we’re working on right now.

First off congrats to the AH team for posting the 300th episode of Let’s Play: Minecraft, which officially puts them at a higher episode count than almost any TV show ever made. Someone manually did the math on this, but I checked myself and yes it’s almost 9.5 days of content back-to-back. In celebration of this milestone, we’re (finally?) going to break out Let’s Play Minecraft on its own series page on RoosterTeeth.com! We’ll keep you posted when that happens.

In other exciting news today, as of this weekend podcasts from Rooster Teeth and the Let’s Play family will be available on Spotify! This has been a long time coming, something we get asked about all the time, and I’m so happy we finally got it done. All the libraries are there, and new episodes will be added at the same time they appear on all other podcast listening platforms. Note - post shows are NOT available on Spotify and are still only available for FIRST members on RoosterTeeth.com. Here’s the list of shows you can hear now on Spotify:

    • Always Open

    • Beyond The Pine

    • CCTV

    • Class Of 198X

    • DEATH BATTLE Cast

    • Dude Soup

    • Twits and Crits

    • Twits and Crits: The League of Extraordinary Jiremen

Most of what we’re focused on now involves getting svod.roosterteeth.com running smoothly and looking good. This week we finished testing image safe areas for featured episodes on desktop and mobile/tablet, and now that we know the specs we can dive into re-safe-area-ing everything. Those images will roll out over the next month or so. As that finishes, we’ll dive into a reorganization and metadata cleanup project to hopefully catch any out-of-order episodes and also make better use of series pages for shows that have grown unwieldy (...like Let’s Play…). We’ll likely also be able to upgrade resolution on some videos at that point, with more on the way afterwards.

We greenlit a few pilots this month too! You heard about these from RTX Sydney: Achievement Haunters will be AH’s wild journey to discover ghosts in the scariest places in Texas. We locked our location this week and I am ridiculously excited. The Murder Chamber (working title) is modern take on a classic murder mystery game. Go into the future where you are judge, jury and guided by Jessica, a super crime solving network. We’re talking through the right way to release these so you can tell us if we should make more.

Last but not least we’ve been staring for hours at the full data wrap up from 2017, which like I’ve mentioned before is the most accurate viewership data we’ve ever had about RoosterTeeth.com. That’s already led us to some interesting new insights. It has reaffirmed to us how important a free-to-watch window is for our content, especially on a 7-day FIRST Exclusive window. And it’s told us a lot about how the new svod.roosterteeth.com can be a better place for our community to gather around content.

Oh and here’s something weird: ScrewAttack’s video Top 10 Sex Scenes in Video Games had a pretty big burst in traffic from organic Google searches over the past month. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is the first one I’ve done, so tell me what I missed! What else do you want to see in these updates?

  • Open Beta Update - 2.23.18

    revelsrouser Product / Design

    Hey, everyone,

I’ve pulled myself out of the engineering mines for a moment to send out a note about our kick-ass new video site, currently in development and in open beta for those of you who are new around here. I want to thank all of you who have been using the new beta site at svod.roosterteeth.com, and especially those of you who have sent us your feedback. There has been a ton of it, and we appreciate every word. We’re trying to respond to as many tickets as we can personally, and we want you to know that the team here is really listening to you and working on the things you bring to our attention. Even after we officially leave beta and launch the site, we’ll continue to work every day to make it the best place in the world to watch Rooster Teeth content.

In the meantime, we are squashing as many of the big bugs as we can, and doing so as fast as we can. Some issues with login that caused a “Grey Screen” - that’s fixed. Login from Facebook, also fixed. There are still some issues around older videos not playing. We are aware of this and are fixing them as fast as humanly (or computerly) possible!

So if you haven’t been to svod.roosterteeth.com to check out the beta site, go do that! For all of you using the site, please don’t stop. In fact, use it more. Chat during livestreams and drop some comments on the videos you watch. Let’s start making this new house feel like a home for the entire community!

    Stay tuned for updates! <3

  • The Desk Of The Desk Of DEATH BATTLE: Godzilla Is A Sellout - Writer & Editor Notes

    JoshuaKazemi ScrewAttack Editor
    • This script started out with several ads featuring lots of different characters. It was a few hundred more words than the average DoDB script so we focused on Godzila
    • Who owns this character? Is he public domain? Why has he been in THIS many ads?
    • Remember this stellar "Godzilla" joke from Austin Powers: I Don't Remember Which One? I do.
    • I wish "Godzilla Repellent" was a real thing because it would essentially just be a quick and easy way to spray some Dr. Pepper down your throat. Mmm.
    • I got Lisa Foiles to say "Hold on to your butts" I can cross that one off my bucket list.
    • Of all of the things I've written, the line "Needlessly destroying signage" might be one of my favorites.
    • Sometimes you throw something together in the edit because you know it'll get reviewed. Like "This idea is crazy and it'll either have to get changed or someone will give me a note to make it better" And then sometimes your crazy, subliminal Blue Apron joke makes it into the final video exactly as you had it.
    • What are your thoughts on Godzilla (2014)? I wanna know. Can you show me? (In the comments below)
    • My James Gunn/GOTG mega Easter egg comes in the form of something hidden in shots from the Snickers ad. I'll leave it at that....happy hunting.
    • There's something really great about the feeling you get when you make your boss cry with laughter over a Nickleback edit/joke in your video.

  • DC Just Can't Catch A Break. Joss Whedon Exits BATGIRL.

    ericvespe

    0*mcw4Z5J-aIC0RiQ1.jpg

Joss Whedon has stepped away from Batgirl. His official reasoning for departing the project is that he spent a year trying to come up with a story to match the badass character and just couldn't quite do it. I'm sure there's other things at play, like how he didn't quite fix Justice League enough to make it less of a flop and the overall chaotic state of everything behind the scenes at the DCEU, but that's the reason he gave to The Hollywood Reporter.

Man, DC just can't catch a break. It's getting real frustrating as a comic movie fan seeing them squander so much potential and I say this as someone who likes both Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck as Superman and Batman.

There's no reason there can't be amazing movies made out of these properties but the brass at Warner Bros seems less concerned about making good product than just making product period. Any and everything you got, throw it at that wall! Something will stick!

Whedon has shown a lot of talent at writing female characters, but maybe this cloud will have a silver lining and they'll actually bring in some, you know, females to write and/or direct these female characters? It certainly worked for Wonder Woman. Something tells me a talented female screenwriter might not have to spend a year trying to find a decent Barbara Gordon story.

I'm having a hard time dealing with this current news story that the survivors of the Florida shooting are being coerced into outrage by evil anti-gun forces. If memory serves, right after 9/11 in the United States there was a number of candlelight vigils and calls for action – – I don't remember anyone needing a coach to feel outraged about that particular tragedy. It's disgusting that someone would say this about kids who have experienced unimaginable trauma simply because their views don't align with their own.

Wipers shred. If you like music that shreds, you should listen to Wipers. The top Youtube comment on Doom Town right now is "Punk for people who hate punk" and that's pretty fucking cool.

For fans of: Nirvana and pretty much every grunge band ever, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Hot Snakes, and that sort of thing. This album makes me want to drink a beer in a parking lot. Give the title track a listen.

    FUCK. Right? Here's Doom Town:

The album should be available everywhere, so go steal it, cut the sleeves off your denim jacket, and tell me what you think.

  • Disney rebooting The Muppet Show For Its Streaming Service

    ericvespe

I'm making a big assumption here, saying that Disney is rebooting The Muppet Show specifically. All that has been revealed in a Hollywood Reporter piece is that Disney is going to be rebooting the Muppets for its streaming service they aim to have ready next year. They say it won't be a movie, but a series, so I'm just going to say that it's a reboot of The Muppet Show because that's a great idea and we'll all forget about whatever the hell they did on ABC in 2016.

    the-muppet-show.jpg

Having a weekly Muppet Show that throws back to the edgy, but kind-hearted wit of the original show with modern celebrity guests sounds super up my alley.

Disney's going all out with this as yet unnamed streaming service, promising a live action Star Wars show, some kind of Marvel content, access to their huge library of films and now this Muppets thing. They had me at "Star Wars Show" and everything they're announcing after is pure nostalgic gravy for me. Hrmm... Let's forget I put the words "nostalgic gravy" out there, shall we? We'll put it in the same "it didn't happen" box that we're putting the shitty ABC Muppets reboot in. 'kay? 'kay.

  • Ready or Not, Jurassic World 3 is coming June 11th, 2021!

    jurassic-fallen-kingdom-trailer-1-970.jp

You may think it's weird that Universal is announcing a release date for a third installment in a franchise before the second installment is even released, but that's kind of the way Hollywood operates these days.

Look at their fumble with the Dark Universe. They announced cast and projects bringing their monsters into a giant shared universe and then oops, The Mummy fizzled, public interest was flatlining and suddenly all those projects are gone now.

It's a little less of a gamble here. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom would have to flop big time for them to rethink this because the first Jurassic World made so, so, so, so much money. Jurassic World 2 would have make Pluto Nash money to derail this franchise at this point.

People like dinosaurs, they like Chris Pratt and they want to see those two things together in big, spectacle films. It's not a hard formula to figure out.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Colin Trevorrow will return to co-write alongside franchise newcomer Emily Carmichael, who seems to have been picked by Spielberg himself after Amblin picked up a script of hers called Powerhouse. She has also written a remake of The Black Hole for Disney and worked on the Pacific Rim sequel hitting later this year.

    No director is attached yet.

Early days, for sure, but again... barring catastrophe this is a no-brainer for Universal.

  • Store Update! Rooster Teeth x Women's Line

    MicheleFeghali Graphic Design

It's no surprise that women are underrepresented in the gaming industry, but after some quick Googling, I found that women actually make up 42% of all gamers in the US, and that number is only growing. Rooster Teeth fans are not entirely different, and the eCommerce team is hyper aware that women's cuts are underrepresented in the RT Store. BUT HEY, that's all finally about to change. So ladies, here's to you.

Coming real soon, we'll be launching a line with 100% women's silhouettes and cuts throughout 2018. To do that, the RT Store reached out to four inspiring/amazing/deserving women at Rooster Teeth and collaborated with them to bring you a collection that speaks to each one's personality and aesthetic. Those women are Lindsay Jones, Ashley Jenkins, Elyse Willems, and Bethany Feinstein.

    hoOcDbb.jpg

We are all super excited to finally launch this idea, and have it become a reality. Of course, guys can get in on this too, but just know that the sizing and fits will be tailored for women so order accordingly! What this *doesn't* mean is our normal shirt releases getting a women's option – those will stay unisex sizing – but rather a separate collection that will release every quarter that stands on its own, made by women for women. Got it? Okay cool.

Now, I've personally heard a lot of fans ask whether or not the talent designs their own shirts... since it is their line and all (specifically the Barbara and Geoff collections), so I'll give a little insight on how this all happens. We'll first start out with some collaboration from both the talent and the designer, and they'll tell us what kind of look/feel they're going for. In Lindsay's case, she told us about some Dubstep/Electropop artists that personified her style, and keywords like "skulls" and "cats." From there, I took my moodboards and tailored them around that feedback, eventually coming up with 10-15 designs that we later got together to discuss. From there, we had back and forth tweaking until she was happy.. and ta-da! Clothing line. So the short answer I guess is, no, the talent does not put pen to paper to design these things, but they are very much involved in the creative direction itself.

We wanted to hear not only the opinion of these talented four, but ALL the women in the company (why not, right?), so we held a meeting a few months back and invited any and all women in the company to try on different shirt blanks – see which ones fit better than others, the quality, feel, sizing, etc. and which ones we liked as a whole – which I thought was super cool. I mean, trying on clothes with friends hardly felt like work, but I hope y'all love the things we chose! Shoutout to eCommerce Buyer, Monica De La Cruz, for organizing all of it and being another kickass female who's made this entire project possible.

    d5RXnj1.jpg

Another thing to note – we oftentimes work with fanartists. Here, we worked with artist @TheClayDart, who had made this awesome neon cat design in Lindsay's honor, and it worked so well with her style and the rest of the line that we just had to include it. Just another awesome way to make 2018 all about community.

With all that said, being the only female designer on a team of seven, it was really important to me to take on this project. I wanted to give it a... what do they say... "woman's touch," and give the ladies in our community the attention they deserve with designs that are tailored for them. AND I'm beyond excited for you all to see what's next in store because we're just getting started. Here – have a tiny peek.

    AmhQcpr.jpg

If anyone has questions, I'd be happy to answer them. And of course, thanks so much to Lindsay, Ashley, Elyse, and Bethany for being such lovely, creative individuals and letting me bring your personalities to life. It's definitely been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I've been able to be a part of at Rooster Teeth.

I've typed the word "women" a lot.

  • Busy, busy, busy...

    Kdin

So we're already almost 2 full months into 2018 and it's already a whirlwind!  Between work, stuff at home, and tons of personal side-projects, I've been probably keeping myself a bit "too busy".

I'm re-writing a comic/animated series concept I wrote over 10 years ago, updating it a bit and re-working some details.

I streamed the original Legend of Zelda to completion in order to get footage for an upcoming personal project.

I did a tease announcement of a VLOG series that will deal with issues like mental health, personal issues, dealing with stress, etc.

Attempted to get some low-key Voice Over roles in a couple projects I saw asking for auditions.

I'm in the process of writing a (live-action) show concept that came to me in a dream, and I'm really hyped about.  Though the idea is still in a very early "series of stickynotes on a wall" phase.

Amidst all that, the usual stuff continues!  The Know videos, MPG videos, trying to maintain a regular Twitch streaming schedule, and day-to-day life stuff.

I'm putting in a good effort for 2018, doing my best to make this year, -my year-.

I hope you're all doing your best for 2018 as well, I would love to hear about the projects you may be working on, books you are reading, games you are playing, etc!

  • Not surprising, but still good news: Jessica Chastain in talks to play adult Bev in It: Chapter Two!!!

    ericvespe

    sophiajessicait_large.jpg

Forgive me for the bragging I'm about to do, but I swear I have a point to it. I'm a big Stephen King nut. Like I've literally read every one of his novels and I started doing so in the 6th grade (Cujo was the first book I read). So I let it be known to the powers that be at Warner Bros that I was interested in visiting the set of the film adaptation back when I was with Ain't It Cool and got an invite to the press day.

While there I got to see a lot of cool things and talk to pretty much everybody, including every one of the kids in the Losers Club. Way back then, when they were still shooting the first one, I asked them to fancast their adult selves should It prove to be popular and warrant a sequel that finishes the second half of the story told in King's giant book.

They all had great answers (read them all here in more depth if you wish)... Jeremy Ray Taylor pointed out that Ben buffs up when he gets older, so he wanted Chris Pratt, Jack Grazer said in another interview closer to release he saw Jake Gyllenhaal as grown up Eddie (if you saw Okja you know he could pull this off), Finn Wolfhard chose Bill Hader for grown up Richie (brilliant, by the way), Wyatt Oleff thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be good for Stanley, Chosen Jacobs liked either Chadwick Boseman or David Oyelowo for Mike (I think Oyelowo is about as perfect casting as possible for that character), Jaeden Lieberher was drawing a blank for Bill and one of the press people attending suggesting Alexander Skarsgard. Jaeden seemed to like it, but Finn loved it, said it would be a big f-you to their Pennywise, Bill Skarsgard, who is Alexander's little brother.

The very first person who we asked to fancast their adult selves was Sophie Lillis and her response was short, but sweet: "Jessica Chastain. No brainer."

Andy and Barbara Muschietti seem to agree as Variety has revealed that Chastain is officially in negotiations to star in the sequel.

No surprise. She's the obvious choice with or without the support of her younger self and she also has a history with the Muschietti's, having starred in their first feature film Mama.

I'm psyched. I adored the first chapter and I can't wait to see them build up this cast and finish out this story. Looks like that September 2019 release date might still hold since they're casting up now.

One other tidbit from the set visit: Andy Muschietti talked about his desire to bring the kids back for the sequel, wanting to film some flashbacks that would influence the adults' story, stuff that wasn't in the first film. He's gotta work fast because all those kids are at an age where 6-12 months will radically change their voices and appearance!

  • Low(ish) Carb Chicken Tortilla Soup (Instant Pot)

    emilyweeks RT Office Coordinator

I'm back to talk about food again. Go figure.

This week's instant pot/meal prep brings us a super simple chicken tortilla soup!  I based my recipe off this Confessions of a Fit Foodie recipe, so I'll definitely give credit where credit is due. I just changed some things around depending on what I already had available.

Now I'll be completely honest here, this isn't as good as regular homemade chicken tortilla soup.. like the kind that's really hearty and more unhealthy.. lol But this turned out pretty good for a healthy version. I got six decent servings out of this, perfect for this week's meal prep.

    the soup

1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast

    4 cups chicken stock/broth

1 can diced tomatoes with green chiles

1 can diced tomatoes (no salt added)

1 cup black beans (the kind I buy have lime and jalapeno in them, yum. also if you really like black beans you may want to put more than a cup. this wasn't a whole lot)

    1 cup corn

1 medium onion (I sliced this in pretty big slices, like how you would for fajitas. you can definitely slice yours smaller if you prefer)

    3 garlic cloves, minced

    1 tbsp chile powder

    1 tbsp comino

    1 tsp sea salt

    1 tsp black pepper

    1 tsp paprika

    the tortilla strips

3 tortillas (I used Mission's Carb Balance tortillas because they only have 6g of net carbs, but full-carb tortillas would probably taste better if you aren't watching your carb count)

    olive oil

    sea salt

optional topping: avocado and whatever the hell else you want, really

    - Throw all soup ingredients into your pot, give it a good stir, add the lid and seal. For IP users, you can use your Manual pressure function with a 15 minute cook time. (Crock Pot brand - Soup function for 15 minutes.)

    - While that's cooking, get to work on your tortilla strips. I didn't realize just how easy these would be until I made them... Go ahead and preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

    - Spread the tiniest drop of olive oil onto your tortillas, just enough to spread a thin coat over the whole thing. Slice into thin strips, line up on a baking sheet, and sprinkle sea salt over them. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or really, just keep an eye on them until they're as crispy/golden as you would like. (Remember, these will get soggy when you put them in your soup.)

    - When your soup cook cycle is complete, you can either perform a quick or natural release. I don't really see any harm in either way. But when you do decide to open this aromatic vessel, you'll need to pull your chicken apart with a couple of forks, if it hasn't already fallen apart enough.

    - Ladle yourself a bowl of soup and throw some of the tortilla strips in. I also topped mine with a quarter of an avocado for some extra good fats and deliciousness. If you're going to portion yours out immediately for meal prep - don't add the tortilla strips or other toppings in yet. Freeze or refrigerate the soup by itself, and keep the other toppings out until you've heated it back up and are ready to eat.

So, again, this isn't the best chicken tortilla in the world, but it does taste good and it gets the job done. Next time around, I think I might experiment with a little tomato paste to give a little extra flavor, color, and thicken it up a little. I might play around with the seasonings more, as well.

If you give this a try, let me know how it goes! I'd love to hear about y'alls adventures.

It's my 3rd Anniversary here at Rooster Teeth. Recently my other social media accounts reminded me of everything that led up to my interview and acceptance here, which is a story I still owe you guys. But.....not just yet.

Still, all in all, it's been a wonderful three years. From working on the end of The Chorus trilogy for RvB13,the various visual styles that we threw at you for RvB14 and the new story arch in RvB15 to the continuing evolution of RWBY from seasons 3 to the present, and the cuteness that is RWBY Chibi, I've been so lucky to have been a part of all of it.

AND, there's the matter of seeing how both the Animation Department and Rooster Teeth in general have grown over such a short time. There are so many wonderful and talented people that work here.

I'm humbled and honored to be a part of this company, community and family.

Hello again from me and the Skill Tree team!

We have an exciting opportunity for the many of you out there who possess the skills that I do not, and that it to draw real good!

A few days ago I mentioned this:

"As you may have seen from social media and the end of the BurnieVLOG *sob*, myself and a small, incredible crew have been working our butts off making five episodes of "Skill Tree", where we take an unskilled British executive assistant (it me) and transform her into a battle-hardened femme-fatale, RPG style!"

The thing is we want, no, we NEED your help.

We're looking for an artist (or artists) who can help with our show art and thumbnails! Someone who can visualize what this "battle-hardened femme-fatale" version of me would look like, what our post apocalyptic universe she has to navigate would look like and how she's going to use these badass skills to stay alive and kick butt. We're thinking a graphic novel-esque style...the 28 Days Later Graphic Novel meets Tomb Raider meets The Last Of Us kinda thing.

I'm not sure what we can offer you yet...I'm working on that bit. But it will be cool - promise!

If you want to give it a go send your artistry to skilltree@roosterteeth.com

Howdy Ya'll (which is a thing we say in Texas, without irony)

Tomorrow we're having a "Geoff Line" drop, but this one is a little different than the usual fair. It's called "Simple Geoff", and it will be the first stocked shirt in my line.

The idea behind the Geoff line of merch, is that the limited nature of the items A) appeals to my love of collecting things, but more importantly B) allows us the flexibility of trying out new and different ideas, while limiting the risk associated with buying large amounts of stock (as we traditionally do), freeing us up to be more creative.

To that end, I know there are a lot of you that can't be parked on the internet on a Friday, waiting for my dumb stuff to drop, so we've come up with this idea.

Completely in addition to the normal Geoff stuff that drops in limited quantities, we will have one constant shirt, a "Simple Geoff" shirt if you will, that is continually available for purchase, and rotates out on a quarterly basis. So, Feb 16th will be the first iteration of that. It's a knife logo pocket tee in green (shown below), that will be for sale until roughly Q2 2018, where we will refresh and change it in some way, and sell that version.

Does that make any sense? I'll try a TLDR: Normal Geoff line will continue to function as always, with the addition of a quarterly "Simple Geoff" shirt you can pick up whenever, and not have to worry about missing the drop. Hopefully this will satisfy collectors and non-collectors alike! If you have any questions about this journal (and only this journal), please ask them here and I will try and answer.

P.S. There's a hat dropping tomorrow that IS LIMITED.

  • RWBY Manga Blazing Up the Charts!

    TheOtherGeoff Stuff and/or Things!

    Hey gang,

You may have heard that our friends at VIZ Media released the newly localized version of the RWBY Manga last month. We are incredibly pleased by how the book turned out - and apparently so are you because it is selling like hot cakes!

The RWBY Manga debuted at #2 on the NPD BookScan charts. It's tracking just behind the latest volume of Brian K. Vaughan's ultra awesome SAGA series. This is huge news. We know how much y'all love RWBY and we know how much y'all love manga, but we never could have predicted how much y'all would love a RWBY manga! Thanks for all the support.

This bodes incredibly well for the other upcoming RWBY manga localizations. The adventures will continue when RWBY Official Manga Anthology 1: Red Like Roses hits store shelves on May 15, 2018.

In the meantime, go pick yourself up your very own copy of the RWBY Manga. It's out now wherever fine manga are sold - and (even cooler) will be available on our RT store very soon!

Stay tuned for more updates as they come in. Until then, happy reading!

    Best,

    Geoff

  • Yep, Black Panther Is Pretty Great! Check Out My Review!

The hype is strong for Black Panther. I certainly felt the weight of it as I sat down for the press screening. Not only was this movie supposed to be an all-timer, but it's also super duper important culturally and anyone who doesn't love it probably hates black people and donates to Donald Trump on the regular.

Thankfully the movie is really damn good so I don't have to question my own progressiveness. Phew, that was a close one.

Is it in danger of being overhyped? Yeah, for sure. At the end of the day it's a good superhero movie, but I didn't walk out of it feeling like I did after credits rolled on The Dark Knight or even The Avengers.

To be fair, Black Panther is about something way different than either of those films. Avengers was a big feel good ass-kicking actionfest that was all about dazzling you with the first ever superhero team up of that scale and The Dark Knight was a dark, gritty examination of how good people deal with the injection of chaos into their world. Black Panther isn't going for either of those two feelings, falling somewhere between the two, actually.

There isn't much action in the movie. In fact it plays a little more like a modern era James Bond film than a typical Marvel superhero story for almost all the action in the first half. The fights are one on one as T'Challa proves his worthiness for the throne and there's a mission to a South Korean underground casino that reminded me a ton of Skyfall in how it was shot and the political intrigue on display.

This film is more concerned with character and world-building than it is on dazzling you with an action set piece very 15 minutes. Instead it cranks up the emotional stakes until you get the big final action scene, filled with warring tribes on the ground, dogfights in the skies and, yes, armored rhinos, that leaves you exiting the theater feeling fulfilled on that front but when you look back you realize just how little action is actually in the movie.

That's a testament to a few things working very well. There's the wonderful direction from Ryan Coogler that keeps the pace going and puts an emphasis on bringing out the most personality he can out of his actors. There's the incredible production value on display. Wakanda is bright, detailed, vibrant and just about every single shot, interior or exterior, offers a visual feast for the eyes. From cinematography to production design to wardrobe to makeup, all departments are way on point.

I suppose there could be human beings in this world that will be upset that Black Panther is isn't wall to wall kicking and scratching and stabbing and punching, but they'd be overlooking some pretty great character work to complain about it. Hard to believe comic book fans would complain about the little stuff, though, right?

Oddly enough Black Panther himself is one of the least interesting characters in this film. He's not a bad character by any means and Chadwick Boseman is more confident in his performance than he was in Civil War, but the very nature of T'Challa's place in this story forces him to be a bit more serious. He's taking on the mantle of King. There's no conflict about that even if he does feel the weight of the throne. His struggle in the movie is all about his desire to be a good King, but not knowing if he can be. He's terrified of letting his country down, but even from early on he doesn't let that fear control him.

So as a character he doesn't grow too much. He's steadfastly good-hearted, a rock for his people, but with the weight of that responsibility on him the whole time.

That allows the movie to get stolen by some more colorful, looser performances. Everybody is going to walk away from this movie adoring Letitia Wright's Shuri. She's T'Challa's sister and kind of Q from James Bond folded into Tony Stark. She's smart, but young and so, so full of smart-ass that she brightens literally every scene she's in just by being there.

Then there's Danai Gurira, playing Okoye, the head of the royal guard and loyal to the throne above all else. Gurira could have played this more serious and been badass and intimidating, but by going the more human route she becomes so much richer. She's cocksure and an incredible warrior, but she's also kind and funny and willing to call it like it is, no matter who she's talking to.

    Optimized-bp-okoye.png

Okoye also happens to have the most internal conflict in the movie. She's incredibly loyal, but her oath is sworn to the throne, not a specific king. So when the big bad guy comes in and challenges T'Challa to the throne her alliance is tested. She knows Erik Killmonger is bad news and doesn't like his politics. She also knows that T'Challa is a better king, but that's not her choice to make.

It's a fascinating place to put the greatest warrior asset in this film and Danai Gurira sells every aspect of it; the doubt, the resolve, the badassness, the conflict... it's all there and Gurira makes it look effortless as she somehow expresses it all from scene to scene.

I brought up Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger, who we know is the bad guy because he spells his name with the evil 'K' instead of the heroic 'C'. Another of this film's strengths is we actually have a good, well-rounded villain. That's not to say Killmonger isn't diabolical at certain points. There definitely fun had and some rhetorical mustaches get twirled, but you can see things from his point of view.

In many ways he's a stronger leader than T'Challa. He may not be as wise and good-hearted, but he has a plan to save his people... not just the safe, hidden world of Wakanda, but all repressed people of color all over the world. It's time to shift the power away from those who enslaved and back to the people who were wronged. He's not wrong that societies are built to prevent that power from shifting and his plan isn't about making him ruler of the world, really. There's an altruistic undercurrent to the reason he wants the power.

The easy comparison is that T'Challa is MLK and Killmonger is Malcolm X. They have similar goals and desires, but Killmonger is impatient and willing to use more aggressive tactics. This leads to a faceoff that is actually very dramatic and not just CGI dudes punching each other a lot. There's that, too, of course, but there's meaning behind it and the stakes for winning or losing this fight is high. The result will define the conscience of a whole nation.

Coogler brings all this to screen in an authentic way that can't be denied. The Afrofuturist look executed so well and automatically makes this a different kind of superhero film. The uniqueness is a fresh flavor for the MCU and on a deeper societal level carries with it a level of representation previously unseen. Yes, we've had great roles for people of color in tentpole cinema, but this isn't just about having a strong black man in a costume, it's about embracing a culture and giving it the same love and signal boosting attention as we do with our traditional European heroes.

I know I started this review kinda making fun of the woke reviewers, but it is something you can not separate when watching this movie. At least I, a white man quickly approaching middle age, couldn't. That feel of something new is so tied in with the character and the story being told and the world they've built is unquestionably at the forefront of this movie, which could piss off a lot of the more right-leaning white folks that see the movie, but the counter to that is it's going to inspire so many more people on the other side of that coin for exactly the same reasons. Black Panther doesn't hide its differences. It celebrates them. That is the takeaway here and that is what feels revolutionary about the whole project.

I hope this if the first of many like giant mega blockbuster films. The box office predictions seem to indicate it might be. There's one thing Hollywood like above all else and that's money. If it become financially safe to make these kinds of movies with this kind of diverse cast then the door will be blown wide open.

That's exciting, not just from a politically progressive standpoint, but also a cinema-loving standpoint. More diverse voices means more diverse storytelling, which means better, less predictable movies. Also, as a comic book movie fan, it means at least Marvel is still in the business of changing things up. Guardians of the Galaxy changed the feeling of what superhero movies could be. Black Panther does it as well. That will be why Marvel succeeds for another 10 years.
